Preparing Your Laboratory for the 2027 EU Refrigerant Regulation

2027 EU Refrigerant Regulation - Which Laboratory equipment may be affected?

The European Union is tightening rules on fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) to reduce emissions and support the transition to low-GWP cooling  technologies. (http://data.europa.eu/eli/reg/2024/573/oj).
In spring 2024, the EU updated its F-gas framework through Regulation (EU) 2024/573. A major milestone takes effect in 2027, further restricting the use and servicing of high-GWP refrigerants.  For laboratories using cooling and temperature-controlled equipment, this evolution makes early planning essential.

What does the 2027 Regulation mean for laboratories?

European Union Flag

Older lab equipment using conventional refrigerants may face:

  • Reduced refrigerant availability
  • Higher maintenance costs
  • Stricter servicing conditions
  • Longer repair lead times
  •  Increased lifecycle uncertainty

Existing equipment remains usable, and no immediate replacement is required. However, laboratories should anticipate changes in refrigerant availability, maintenance costs and future equipment choices.

Which laboratory equipment may be affected?

The regulation does not only concern refrigerated circulators. Any laboratory equipment using refrigeration technology may be impacted over time.

Examples include:

  •  Refrigerated circulators (see below our trade-in program)  and chillers
  • Laboratory refrigerators and freezers
  • ULT freezers
  • Refrigerated centrifuges
  • Refrigerated incubators
  • Climate and stability chambers

Why Act Before 2027?

Proactive transition provides:

  • Controlled budgeting
  • Reduced downtime risk
  • Stable service planning
  • Improved ESG positioning
  • Long-term compliance assurance

Waiting until regulatory pressure increases may result in higher costs and limited availability.
