Binnen dit groottebereik is de logaritme van de moleculaire massa van het eiwit lineair met de reciproke elektroforetische mobiliteit. Zo kan het molecuulgewicht van een onbekend eiwit worden geschat a.d.h.v. een standaardcurve van bekende eiwitgroottes. Deze chemie kan ook worden gebruikt om de hoeveelheid eiwit effectief te kwantificeren en de zuiverheid van een eiwitproduct te bepalen.
