Wat is een labwatersysteem?

Voor de meeste toepassingen in een labomgeving is de kwaliteit van kraanwater onvoldoende. Denk aan de aanwezigheid van hoge concentraties ionen, organische materialen, deeltjes (colloïden) en micro-organismen. Al deze verontreinigingen kunnen de resultaten van de analyses in het lab beïnvloeden. Een labwatersysteem is een systeem dat water zuivert tot de gewenste kwaliteit voor uw     toepassing door verschillende zuiveringstechnieken te combineren.
Voor laboratoriumtoepassingen worden 
3 verschillende watertypes gedefinieerd op basis van hun zuiverheid: type I, type II en type III.

type 3 waterzuivering rephile
Water van type 3 wordt ook wel omgekeerde-osmosewater (RO-water) of water van laboratoriumkwaliteit genoemd. Het is afkomstig van leidingwater door 2 belangrijke zuiveringstechnieken toe te passen: voorfiltratie en omgekeerde osmose. Tijdens de voorfiltratie vangen de deeltjesfilters alle deeltjes op die een grotere afmeting hebben dan de poriën. Soms worden ook actieve koolfilters gebruikt in de voorfiltratie. Deze filters vangen voornamelijk organische materialen uit het water door een proces dat adsorptie wordt genoemd. Het belangrijkste onderdeel van RO-systemen is natuurlijk het RO-membraan (omgekeerde osmose). In deze component wordt het water tegen de osmotische druk in door een semipermeabel membraan gepompt. Deze stap verwijdert een groot deel van de verontreinigingen via het afvalwater: ionen, bacteriën, colloïden, organisch materiaal, pyrogenen, ...

Typische toepassingen voor water van type III zijn het handmatig spoelen van glaswerk, het naspoelen van laboratoriumvaatwassers, het vullen van waterbaden, klimaatkamers, autoclaven, ...

Water type II wordt ook wel EDI-water, zuiver water of water van analytische kwaliteit genoemd. De eerste stappen zijn in de meeste gevallen hetzelfde als voor water type III. Dit betekent dat combo-instrumenten die zowel type III als type II uit tabwater halen eenvoudig te produceren zijn. Om water type III te zuiveren tot kwaliteit type II, worden in de meeste gevallen 2 extra zuiveringsstappen toegepast: elektrodeïonisatie en uv-bestraling. De elektrodeïonisatiemodule (EDI) is opgebouwd als een harskolom met een positieve elektrode, een negatieve elektrode en meerdere halfdoorlatende membranen. Het verwijdert een zeer groot deel van de reeds gereduceerde ionenconcentratie. De uv-lamp bestraalt het water vervolgens met licht met een golflengte van 254 nm. Uv-licht met deze golflengte is zeer efficiënt tegen DNA. Het uv-licht zal daarom alle micro-organismen doden en het water steriel maken.

Wat is water type I?

Water type I wordt ook ultrapuur water of reagenswater genoemd. Het kan geproduceerd worden door een aantal extra filtratietechnieken toe te voegen aan de technieken gebruikt voor water type II, maar het kan ook direct geproduceerd worden uit water type III. In de praktijk wordt water type I voor de meeste toepassingen direct geproduceerd uit type III-water/RO-water. Om water van type I te produceren uit water van type II of III, zijn 3 extra zuiveringsstappen nodig: een dubbele uv-lamp, een ionenuitwisselingskolom en een koolstoffilter. De uv-lamp straalt uv-licht uit met 2 golflengten: 254 nm en 185 nm. Het uv-licht met golflengte 254 nm doodt verder alle micro-organismen en het uv-licht met golflengte 185 nm oxideert organisch materiaal zonder het te verwijderen. In de ionenuitwisselingskolom wordt de ionenconcentratie verder verlaagd. Deze kolom is opgebouwd uit anionenwisselaarhars en kationenwisselaarhars. In de laatste stap wordt het geoxideerde organische materiaal verwijderd door de actieve koolfilter.
