Wat is een laboratoriumwatersysteem?

Voor de meeste laboratoriumtoepassingen is leidingwater niet zuiver genoeg. Het bevat ionen, organische stoffen, deeltjes (colloïden) en micro-organismen.


Deze verontreinigingen kunnen uw analyseresultaten vertekenen. Een laboratoriumwatersysteem verwijdert ze door verschillende zuiveringstechnieken te combineren, voor water met exact de kwaliteit die uw toepassing vereist.


Laboratoriumwater wordt ingedeeld in drie zuiverheidsgraden: type I, type II en type III.

Type III-water — ook reverse-osmosewater (RO) of laboratoriumwater genoemd — wordt uit leidingwater geproduceerd via twee kerntechnieken: voorfiltratie en omgekeerde osmose.​

Bij de voorfiltratie houden deeltjesfilters alles tegen dat groter is dan hun poriën. Soms worden actiefkoolfilters toegevoegd om organische stoffen via adsorptie te verwijderen.

Het hart van elk RO-systeem is het omgekeerde-osmosemembraan. Het water wordt tegen de osmotische druk in door dit semipermeabele membraan gepompt. Deze stap voert een groot deel van de verontreinigingen af — ionen, bacteriën, colloïden, organische stoffen en pyrogenen — via het afvalwater.

Typische toepassingen: handmatig spoelen van glaswerk, laatste spoeling in labvaatwassers, vullen van waterbaden, klimaatkasten en autoclaven.

Type II-water — ook EDI-water, zuiver water of water van analytische kwaliteit genoemd — begint meestal met dezelfde stappen als type III. Gecombineerde instrumenten die beide kwaliteiten uit leidingwater leveren, zijn daardoor eenvoudig te bouwen.

De upgrade van type III naar type II voegt twee stappen toe: elektro-deïonisatie en UV-bestraling.

De elektro-deïonisatiemodule (EDI) is een harskolom met een positieve elektrode, een negatieve elektrode en meerdere semipermeabele membranen. Ze verwijdert het grootste deel van de resterende ionen. Een UV-lamp bestraalt het water vervolgens bij 254 nm, een golflengte die zeer effectief is tegen DNA: ze doodt micro-organismen en steriliseert het water.

Typische toepassingen: buffers, pH-oplossingen, kweekmedia en klinische analysers.

Wat is water type I?

Type I-water — ook ultrazuiver water of water van reagenskwaliteit genoemd — bouwt voort op het type II-proces of wordt rechtstreeks uit type III-water (RO) geproduceerd. In de praktijk maken de meeste systemen het rechtstreeks uit RO-water.


Drie extra stappen zijn nodig: een dubbele UV-lamp, een ionenwisselkolom en een koolfilter.

De dubbele UV-lamp werkt op twee golflengtes. Bij 254 nm doodt ze de resterende micro-organismen; bij 185 nm oxideert ze organische stoffen zonder ze te verwijderen. De ionenwisselkolom — opgebouwd uit anion- en kationwisselharsen — verlaagt de ionenconcentratie verder. Ten slotte verwijdert het actiefkoolfilter de geoxideerde organische stoffen.


Typische toepassingen: HPLC, GC, AA, ICP-MS, bufferoplossingen, kweekmedia voor menselijke en dierlijke celkweek en reagentia voor moleculaire biologie.
