What is a lab water system?
In most laboratory applications, tap water is not pure enough. It contains ions, organic matter, particles (colloids) and micro-organisms.
These contaminants can distort your analytical results. A lab water system removes them by combining several purification techniques, producing water at the exact quality your application requires.
Laboratory water is classified into three purity grades: type I, type II and type III.

What is type III water?

Type III water — also called reverse osmosis (RO) water or laboratory grade water — is produced from tap water using two key techniques: pre-filtration and reverse osmosis.
During pre-filtration, particle filters capture everything larger than their pores. Activated carbon filters are sometimes added to remove organic matter through adsorption.
The core of any RO system is the reverse osmosis membrane. Water is pumped through this semi-permeable membrane against osmotic pressure. This step flushes out a large share of contaminants — ions, bacteria, colloids, organic matter and pyrogens — via the waste water.
Typical uses: manual glassware rinsing, final rinse in lab dishwashers, filling water baths, climate chambers and autoclaves.
What is type II water?

Type II water — also called EDI water, pure water or analytical grade water — usually starts from the same steps as type III. Combined instruments that deliver both grades from tap water are therefore easy to build.
Upgrading type III to type II adds two steps: electrodeionization and UV irradiation.
The electrodeionization (EDI) module is a resin column with a positive electrode, a negative electrode and several semi-permeable membranes. It removes most of the remaining ions. A UV lamp then irradiates the water at 254 nm, a wavelength highly effective against DNA that kills micro-organisms and sterilizes the water.
Typical uses: buffers, pH solutions, culture media and clinical analyzers.
What is type I water?
Type I water — also called ultrapure or reagent grade water — builds on the type II process or is produced directly from type III (RO) water. In practice, most systems produce it directly from RO water.
Three extra steps are required: a dual UV lamp, an ion exchange column and a carbon filter.
The dual UV lamp works at two wavelengths. At 254 nm it kills remaining micro-organisms; at 185 nm it oxidizes organic matter without removing it. The ion exchange column — built from anion and cation exchange resins — further lowers the ion concentration. Finally, the activated carbon filter removes the oxidized organic matter.
Typical uses: HPLC, GC, AA, ICP-MS, buffer solutions, culture media for human and animal cell culture, and reagents for molecular biology.
