What is a cytotoxisch kabinet?
A cytotoxisch kabinet is a biosafety cabinet class II A2 that is adjusted for the manipulation of cytotoxic/antineoplastic drugs. A standard biosafety cabinet class II A2 offers good protection of the operator and the environment against the cytotoxic drugs. The problem presents itself when the HEPA filters need to be replaced. Normally, a biosafety cabinet is decontaminated before replacing the filters. Unfortunately, decontamination won’t have an effect on the cytotoxic drugs present in the HEPA filters. Therefore it is not safe for the technician to replace the filters.
De lucht komt de kast binnen via perforaties die zich vóór de werkzone bevinden en wordt vervolgens gemengd met gebruikte downflow lucht in een gemeenschappelijke kamer onder de werkzone (deze lucht wordt niet gemengd met de gefilterde downflow lucht in de hoofdkamer van de kast). Deze gemengde lucht gaat vervolgens door het HEPA-filter dat zich onder de werkzone bevindt.
De HEPA-gefilterde lucht gaat vervolgens door het interne kanaal in de achterwand van de kast naar een gemeenschappelijk luchtplenum waar 35% wordt afgevoerd via het ULPA-uitlaatfilter en 65% gelijkmatig wordt geforceerd via het ULPA-toevoerfilter. Deze gesteriliseerde lucht dient als toevoerlucht, waardoor alle verontreinigingen uit de werkzone van de kast worden gespoeld.
De laminaire toevoerlucht in de werkzone splitst zich en gaat door de perforaties aan de voor- en achterkant van de kamer naar het gemeenschappelijke luchtplenum onder de werkzone, waar de cyclus wordt herhaald.
What is the difference between a cytotoxisch kabinet and a biosafety cabinet class II A2?
The cytotoxisch kabinet has a third large HEPA filter below the worktray. Due to the flow pattern of the cabinet, the air is first lead trough this third filter, where all cytotoxic drugs will be captured. This filter has a special construction. It can be bagged in while the cabinet is still running. This process offers the technician protection against the cytotoxic drugs during the replacement of the filters and makes it more safe to process them as waste.
