Real-world validation of HemoScreen in a mobile diagnostic laboratory
Praesens Care is a Belgian health technology company developing mobile laboratory solutions that bring advanced diagnostic capabilities closer to the point of need.
Its platforms support infectious disease surveillance, decentralized testing and rapid response in remote and resource-constrained environments. Designed for operational flexibility, the laboratories also support epidemic preparedness, CBRN readiness and military medical operations.
Point-of-care diagnostics are essential in these settings. This study, presented at 2026 POC Sympsium in Antwerpen, evaluated the usability and performance of the PixCell HemoScreen hematology analyzer for complete blood count (CBC) testing in the BIONEAR® mobile diagnostic laboratory.

Who is this study relevant for?
- Mobile diagnostic units
- Emergency and disaster response teams
- Decentralized labs and emergency units
- Hospitals seeking faster CBC turnaround at the point of care
- Oncology department
- Isolation room
The Challenge: CBC Testing Outside the Laboratory
Delivering hematology testing in mobile diagnostic laboratories introduces strict operational constraints:
- Limited infrastructure and space
- Continuous movement and vibration
- Generator-based power supply
- Need for rapid deployment
- Minimal training time for operators
- Immediate clinical decision requirements
Traditional hematology analyzers are not designed for such environments. In addition, decentralized settings often rely on capillary blood collection, which can introduce pre-analytical variability compared with conventional venous sampling. Together, these limitations restrict access to reliable near-patient CBC testing.
Real-World Use Case: Praesens Care Mobile Diagnostic Laboratory
Praesens Care develops rapidly deployable mobile laboratories designed for:
- Epidemic response
- Decentralized healthcare delivery
- CBRN preparedness
Within its BIONEAR® mobile diagnostic laboratory, Praesens Care evaluated the usability and performance of the PixCell HemoScreen under real operating conditions.
The evaluation included testing during active generator operation, replicating true field deployment scenarios.
The Solution: POCT CBC Testing with HemoScreen
The PixCell HemoScreen is a point-of-care hematology analyzer designed for:
- Near-patient CBC +5 Diff testing
- Simplified, workflows with Ready-To-Use cartridge
- No maintenance, calibration, liquid reagent
- Easy use by non-technicians
The evaluation focused on installation, usability, workflow integration, training requirements, and robustness in mobile conditions.
Additionally, venous samples showed good agreement with a reference hematology analyzer, supporting analytical reliability alongside usability

“Access to reliable CBC testing remains an important need in remote and decentralised healthcare settings, where traditional laboratory infrastructure is not always readily available. In our mobile laboratory, we therefore need solutions that can deliver consistent performance under demanding conditions without compromising operational efficiency. During our evaluation, the system stood out for its consistent performance, ease of use and seamless integration into our mobile laboratory workflow. These are important strengths in a decentralised setting, where reliability and operational simplicity are key to delivering timely, high-quality hematology testing closer to the patient.”
