A laboratory dishwasher — or glassware washer — is designed to clean laboratory glassware. Its construction differs from a household unit because lab contaminants are highly varied.

Our PLW 86 series large-capacity laboratory washers are designed for maximum processing volumes, whilst still offering outstanding performance and user-friendliness. With a usable volume of 351 litres, they can, for example, wash 324 laboratory vials (100 ml), 588 flasks or 294 pipettes in a single batch.

What is the difference between a laboratory dishwasher and a household dishwasher?

A household dishwasher runs three stages: pre-wash, a cleaning stage with alkaline detergent only, and a final rinse with tap water.

A laboratory dishwasher :

  • uses both alkaline and acid detergent (neutralizer) during cleaning
  • often includes two or more final rinses — the first may use tap water, demineralized water or both; the last always uses demineralized/RO water
  • can heat water to 90 °C, which requires a heat-resistant drain
  • has a type 316 stainless-steel interior (instead of 304), which is more chemically resistant
  • Injector systems matched to different glassware can be fitted. They deliver water directly inside the glassware for more thorough cleaning. 

The main difference is how glassware is dried.

The PG8583 opens the door automatically at the end of the cycle, once the temperature drops below 70 °C. The hot glassware then dries by releasing its remaining moisture to the ambient air.

The PG8593 draws air through a HEPA filter, preheats it, and uses the hot air to dry the glassware actively. Drying is faster, with less risk of droplets left in narrow glassware such as pipettes.
