What is Vacuum Concentration / Evaporation?

Vacuum concentration is a gentle, fast method for concentrating, drying, purifying or evaporating temperature-sensitive samples (liquid products). Liquids (including pure solvents) are evaporated under vacuum, typically from 1 mbar to 30 mbar. The samples are rotated during the process to prevent overboiling.

What are the advantages of vacuum concentration over other concentration methods?

Labs often choose between concentration methods: vacuum concentration, distillation, rotary evaporation, vortex evaporators, nitrogen blowdown, and so on.

Rotational vacuum concentration (RVC) prepares samples quickly while keeping handling gentle. It works for evaporation, drying, purification and concentration.

RVC is a real alternative for anyone using distillation systems, rotary evaporators or freeze dryers. Distillation systems and rotary evaporators evaporate at high temperatures and near-atmospheric pressure — fast, but not especially gentle.

Freeze dryers work at very low temperatures and high vacuum. Samples go straight from solid ice to vapor by sublimation — extremely gentle, but slow.

This is where Christ rotational vacuum concentrators fit in — between the two approaches above. Near room temperature and at a few millibar, the samples (solvents) boil without freezing, which makes the method very fast.

Another advantage: the samples are not exposed to thermal stress, which is especially important for thermally unstable biological and clinical samples.

During vacuum concentration, the material is centrifuged at a moderate 1,350 to 1,750 rpm. The centrifugal force stops samples from splashing due to bumping. The solvent is collected in separators or cold traps, which makes disposal easy and sometimes allows reuse.

RVC is very economical in practice. It suits drying a wide range of aqueous and solvent-based samples, from one millilitre to three litres. Unlike vortex shakers, samples concentrate at the bottom of the vessel — an advantage with small volumes and dilute solutions. It is also efficient: many samples can be dried at once, saving time.

Drying is also easily reproducible, thanks to controlled process parameters such as rotor chamber temperature and vacuum level.
